Education in Uganda.

GWG has provided funding for both secondary and post-secondary education for several Ugandan students struggling to fund their educations in post-conflict Gulu.  Usually semesters were paid one at a time, dependant on academic results.  On occasion years were paid in full, in advance in tandem with other invested private donors.

A special relationship was built for one of our directors who at the same time as her friend in Uganda, struggled under student loans and several part-time jobs in order to pay tuition. Every time she received her student loan funding, a portion would go to her Ugandan friend.  This was essentially the beginning of GWG.  A sharing of resources, between people who had met in extraordinary circumstance and shared similar values; both struggling to pursue higher education as a means of supporting their families, future and selves.  Needless to say, she wishes she could have helped more, but happily both she and her Ugandan friend graduated successfully.

Working to complete their Masters in Human Security and Peacebuilding, several GWG directors were based in Temuco, Chile working on an in-country conflict analysis.  While working they required the skills of a translator; a young university woman named May.  One GWG director took it upon himself to organize a microcredit loan for May, affording her a zero-interest one year loan - in order to fund her participation in an international indigenous rights conference at the UN.  Studying arts and indigenous studies, May made the most of her opportunity in the conference, lining up opportunities and negotiating further microloans upon successful repayment of her first. Profiting from her skills, education and networking capacities afforded through these conferences, May secured a scholarship for her post-graduate studies in her field. She has repaid the loans in full within the required terms and is on her way to a successful career in indigenous rights.

Construction in Kenya.

Before one of our directors had any inkling he would one day work with us, he participated in a GWG project.

It was as simple as overhearing a stressed conversation in which the founding director took a call from a friend in Kenya.  She had returned home to Canada and had taken a call about the collapse of a portion of her friend's roof in Tiwi, Kenya. He was upset as the rains were soon to come and the house was in disrepair, he worried for the health of his family, younger children and mother.

Overhearing the issues, he inquired how much it would cost to fix the lot?

Approximately $100 USD including local labour and supplies she replied. Money which, just having returned from Eastern Africa, she did not have at her immediate disposal for transfer.

That night he sat down and asked if the she would join him in rolling up his spare change.

He donated over $125 USD (in many many coins rolled up) and asked simply for a photo in return.  Having never been to Kenya, he was touched when a hand written letter and two pictures arrived for him in Canada a month later.

The photos boasted a strong, rain-worthy new roof and a letter of thanks from the entire Kenyan family, who had taken the extra money and repaired the entire house as well as enjoyed a great family feast.
